Kit can take the ribbon off your hat and hand it back before you notice it has gone. He knows every back stair and drainpipe in Summerhythe because he learned the town from its rooftops, one fair day at a time, and he still sits on the Wool Exchange leads to eat his lunch.
Kit’s mother died owing money when he was six, and Mags Threlkeld of the Glad Kettle took him in because, in her words, somebody had to and she had the room. He grew up washing tankards and working the Midsummer crowds, until the year Mags caught him with a merchant’s purse and made him give it back in person. Since then he has carried letters for anyone who pays, and he is very fast.
The debt his mother left did not die with her. Last winter Marrable and Daughters bought it from the moneylender who held it, and now a polite clerk in a green coat calls at the Kettle on the first of every month.
- Makes the joke before he makes the decision.
- Protective of Mags, of the Kettle and of anyone smaller than him.
- Distrusts anyone who is polite about money.
Kit’s player tracks the debt: forty-one crowns at the start of the campaign, forty-one crowns now, because the Wardens have not been paid yet.
Equipment
- Two shortswords, a shortbow, and a set of thieves’ tools he describes as “locksmith’s samples.”
- A courier’s satchel with the Kettle’s kettle-mark stitched on the flap.
- Orpiment’s Scale, wrapped in sacking, which he did not steal and nobody believes that.
