Idony Marrable will tell you the interest on a loan before you have asked for one, and smile while she does it. She wears green, the house colour, and a small pair of gold scales on a chain at her throat.
Who she is
The third Marrable to run the counting house, and the first to lend to the Crown. She says so openly: the last two harvests were wet, the old Queen was ill, the treasury needed coin, and Marrable and Daughters had it. She keeps the Crown’s notes in a strongroom under Coin Stair and will show them to anyone with a legitimate interest, which so far has meant Queen Hesper.
What she wants
In her own words, to be repaid on the dates agreed. She is polite about the dragon, careful about the Chancellor, and curious about the Wardens, whose expenses she has offered to advance against the Crown’s account at a very reasonable rate.
Dealings with the Wardens
She was in the square on the day of the fair and was one of the few people who did not run. She sent a note to the Glad Kettle the next morning congratulating the Wardens on their commission. Her clerk still calls on the first of every month about Kit Farrow’s mother’s debt.
