Session 1: A Dragon at the Fair

Kit was on the roof of the Wool Exchange when the dragon landed on it, which he maintains was the best seat in the vale. He had gone up to watch the tumblers and stayed to watch a creature longer than the street set her claws into the lead gutter three yards from his boots. Orpiment looked at him, said “Good morning, tenant,” and read out the lease. Kit said good morning back. It seemed polite.

When the shedlings fell off her in a shower of hot gold flakes and went for the bread ovens, Kit went down a drainpipe and into the smoke after them. Afterwards, in the square, the dragon shed one more scale, the size of a cartwheel, and it landed at his feet. She told him to keep it as a receipt. He tried to give it to Queen Hesper. She told him to do as the lessor said.

Session 2: The Wax Vaults

In the Wax Vaults Kit found what the Sealwrights had missed: a razor wrapped in a twist of gold embroidery thread, dropped behind the shelf where the lease-case stood. He also recognised the name on the missing apprentice’s empty peg. He had drunk with Jory Penwarden at the Kettle twice, and had liked him, and did not say so until they were back in daylight.

Session 3: Under the Sallow Hills

Kit poled the boat up the Brisk for most of a day and complained about it for all of it. At the barrow he stayed outside to watch the hill path while the others went in, and so at dusk he was the one who saw the carriage on the valley road far below, two lamps coming north out of Summerhythe faster than anyone needed to, until they stopped by the Brisk and went out. The next evening, at the west gate, he learned they had been green. He did not know it mattered until they reached the town and heard that Emlyn Crewe was gone.
