Mags Threlkeld

Role Keeper of the Glad Kettle Status alive Age 49
Mags keeps the Glad Kettle the way some people keep a ship.

Mags keeps the Glad Kettle the way some people keep a ship. Everyone under her roof is her responsibility, whether they like it or not. She is tall, red-armed from the washtubs, and has a laugh you can hear from the wharf.

Who she is

She has run the Kettle for nineteen years and fed half the fair-day crowds of Summerhythe from a pie stall on the green every Midsummer for as long. She took in Kit Farrow when his mother died, because somebody had to and she had the room, and she has never once let him pay for his supper.

What she wants

For the Wardens to come home in one piece, for the dragon to stop frightening the dray horses, and for the Marrable clerk to fall in the Brisk. She would also like Queen Hesper to pay her for the four barrels of small beer the Wardens have drunk on the Crown’s account, and has written to say so.

Dealings with the Wardens

The Glad Kettle is the Wardens’ home in Summerhythe. Mags gave them the long room over the brewhouse, a key each, and a list of rules that nobody has read. She lost her pie stall to the shedlings on the day of the fair and has sent the bill to the Keep.
