Orpiment's Scale
Weight8 lb.
Costabout 400 crowns to a collector, if Kit would sell it, which he will not
Current Holder: Kit Farrow
Origin: Orpiment
A single scale from the dragon’s flank, roughly oval, as broad as a cartwheel is high, and the colour of dark honey with a rose sheen along one edge. It is lighter than it looks and harder than steel. Orpiment shed it in the square on the day of the fair, let it fall at Kit Farrow’s feet, and told him to keep it as a receipt.
Properties
- It is too broad and too curved to fight behind. Kit carries it strapped across his back on straps the Quarrel foundry riveted on.
- While a creature holds it in both hands, that creature has resistance to fire damage.
- Shedlings will not attack whoever holds it. They circle it instead, humming.
What it is for
Nobody is sure. Orpiment called it a receipt, which suggests that something has been paid, or acknowledged. Kit has shown it to Queen Hesper, to the Master of the Sealwrights, and to a fishmonger who wanted to buy it. She told him to keep it. The Master told him the dragon’s own word is the strongest seal there is. The fishmonger offered him eleven crowns.
