Marrable and Daughters

Leadership: Idony Marrable

Territory: Summerhythe

Goals

The largest counting house in the vale, three generations old, run from a narrow green-doored building on Coin Stair above the wharf. Marrable and Daughters lends to merchants, farmers, bell-founders, and for the last two years to the Crown. Its sign is a pair of brass scales, and its clerks wear green.

Goals and methods

On paper, a counting house wants to be repaid, and Marrable and Daughters is scrupulous about paper. Every loan is sealed by a Sealwright, every payment is receipted, and every debtor is visited on the first of the month by a clerk who is very polite about it. The house buys old debts from smaller lenders and collects them patiently, which is how it came to hold Kit Farrow’s mother’s.

What the vale says about it

That Idony Marrable is fair, that her grandmother was a terror, and that nobody quite knows where the money came from to lend the Crown so much so quickly. The house’s answer is that it came from depositors. The house has never said which.

Standing with the Wardens

Friendly, on the surface. Idony congratulated the Wardens on their commission in writing, and has offered to advance their expenses against the Crown’s account. Kit’s debt is still due on the first.
