Queen Hesper’s composer is a thin, elegant man with ink-stained cuffs who treats every public room as a place he might be asked to perform, and dresses accordingly. He owes money to three tailors and a copyist, and has never been late with a commission.
Who he is
Emlyn wrote Queen Hesper’s coronation anthem, the new setting of the Founder’s Song that the vale sang at this year’s fair, and a great many songs about love that are funnier than they look. He has not been paid since the spring. He and Odda Quarrel have been having the same argument about music for three years, in taverns, in front of audiences who come to watch.
What he wanted
On the night of the fair, drunk and gloomy in the Glad Kettle, Emlyn said that if the rent proved to be something a composer could supply, he would name his price to the Crown. Everyone laughed. Later that night he asked Iveth, twice, to repeat exactly what the dragon had said.
Dealings with the Wardens
He drank with the Wardens on the evening of day 1 and argued with Odda about whether a dragon could have an ear. When the Wardens came back from the Sallow Hills on day 7, the Keep’s west gate warden told them Emlyn had left the evening before with his lute, two bags and a patron’s carriage, and had not come back.
