tunes everything she touches, wants to make one song that outlives her

Odda carries eight bronze hand-bells in a padded case and can play any tune you hum at her after hearing it once, in harmony with itself. She is sixty-four, which among the dwarves of the foundry lane makes her young and impatient, and she has one ambition she will admit to: to make a song that people are still singing after she is gone.

The Quarrels have cast every bell in Summerhythe for two hundred years, including the Great Tenor in the Wool Exchange tower. Odda grew up in the heat of the casting pit, learning to hear a crack in the bronze before it showed. She could have taken over the foundry. Instead she took the offcuts, tuned them into hand-bells, and went to play in taverns, which her mother has forgiven and her grandfather has not.

She met the other Wardens on the day the dragon came. Odda was up the Wool Exchange tower checking her family’s bell for cracks when the dragon landed on the leads beside it. The bell was sound. The dragon asked her what the bell was for. Odda told her. The dragon listened with an attention nobody had ever given Odda’s explanations before.

  • Tunes cups, railings and other people’s voices without being asked.
  • Competitive about music in a way she finds embarrassing.
  • Believes in craft over talent, and says so to talented people.

Odda’s player has started writing the Wardens’ song for real, between sessions. The GM has been told not to look.
