Sir Ivo came to Summerhythe for the Midsummer tourney, with a polished breastplate, a squire carrying his second lance, and a pennant stitched with a tally of every joust he has won. There are forty-one marks on it. He is quicker than his stories make him sound, and very sure that the world is shaped like the songs about it.

Who he is

A landless knight who has made a living for fifteen years from tourneys and bounties, and who won the Midsummer joust on the morning of the fair, an hour before the dragon came. The Chancellor has promised him more than a fee: the grazing rights of Holt End, and a manor to go with them, if the dragon is gone by Lammas.

What he wants

To be the man who killed the dragon of Quillet, and to be paid the fee the Chancellor offered him on the evening of the fair. Failing that, to be seen trying. He has challenged Orpiment twice: once in the square on the day of the fair, and once on day 3, after riding hard to the foot of the Tally Cliffs, where she flicked him into the pool without looking round and told his squire, in a voice the whole gorge heard, that the Tenant’s people were troubling her rest. Every tavern in Summerhythe was quoting it by day 4.

Dealings with the Wardens

He dined with the Wardens at the Keep on the evening of day 1, showed them his pennant, and asked Beatrix Holloway whether she would hold his horse when he rode out to fight. She said no. He has been trying to win the argument ever since.
