Clemency walks the Wax Vaults with a hooded lamp in one hand and a brass rod in the other, tapping the shelves as she passes to hear whether anything has moved inside them. She talks while she walks and does not look back to see whether you are keeping up.
Who she is
At fourteen Clemency was Iveth Ammerly’s apprentice, the year Iveth was expelled. She stayed on under Oswy Hebden, passed every examination at the first sitting, and was made Under-Archivist at thirty, the youngest in the Company’s history. She has never forgiven Iveth for leaving, and has never said so, which Iveth has noticed.
What she wants
Her apprentice back, and an explanation from him. Jory Penwarden had keys to the lower vaults because Clemency asked for them on his behalf and the Master signed for them. If he cut the page, it was with keys she vouched for, and she wants to hear why from him before she hears it from anyone else.
Dealings with the Wardens
She guided the Wardens into the Wax Vaults on day 3, fought the smirches beside them with the brass rod and a jar of lamp-oil, and opened the lease-case herself. When she saw the cut, she checked Iveth’s estimate of its age against the vellum grain with her own glass, and said “Yes” without looking up.
